Updates on new programming at Deaverview coming soon!

“I had fun performing and the crowd was yelling for us!” – TaQuayeon Brooks, LEAF Deaverview Dance Crew Member

LEAF Schools & Streets partners with Children’s First/Communities in Schools to provide hip-hop dance to the youth in the Deaverview Community. Children First’s mission  is to empower children and their families to reach their full potential through advocacy, education and services. The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Program Overview

Led by award winning dance performer, Lisa Zahiya, the LEAF Deaverview Dance Crew uses hip-hop dance to learn how to embrace movement and coordinate group choreography. They use dance as a vehicle for positive change where they can learn to appreciate their unique bodies and learn to work together. The LEAF Deaverview Dance Crew recently was invited to perform at the halftime show for the 2016 SoCon Basketball Championship. This Class meets every Wednesday at the Deaverview Community Center.

Deaverview Cultural Exchange May 2017

The week before each LEAF Festival, Visiting Teaching Artists and visiting LEAF International groups visit LEAF Resident Teaching Artist Programs in the communities we serve to give everyone the opportunity to share their culture and artform, day-to-day life and ask anything that they are curious about! Deaverview Dance Crew had the opportunity to enjoy a Cultural Exchange with LEAF International Rwanda & Tanzania this May 2017, and nobody in that Children First community room will soon forget it!

“I have been lucky enough to work with the kids at Deaverview for 4 years.  It is important to me to use dance class, not just as a place to learn dance, but as a vehicle for learning about hip hop culture, personal interaction and more.”

Lisa Zahiya, Teaching Artist

“It’s been awesome to watch her confidence increase in just the few months she’s been practicing with Ms. Lisa! [My daughter] is the youngest of 5 children and she has always felt “mothered” by her older siblings, but practicing [dance with Ms. Lisa] has given her so much confidence.”

Nicki, Mother of Youth Performer
