“Unbelievable, I have been in lugufu refugee camp and I had wonderful sessions for dancing. Drums and Selebuka sessions reminded me of decades ago, in our village, cultural drums were used as tools to inform, entertaining during wedding days, political campaigns and in dry sessions for families to entertain themselves after crops cultivations. So, there is memorable and strong history about traditional music instruments. I believe this is a great initiative and workable to African life perspective. RESPECT!” Shadrach-R&S

SELEBUKA! ( dance & sing & celebrate in swahili )

LEAF International (LI) and Roots and Shoots (R&S) successfully kicked off 3 NEW programs in Tanzania to use MUSIC as a vehicle for positive change and encouragement for community involvement in youth led environmental initiatives! The LI Team traveled over 6000 miles to jump-start the LI/R&S music programs. Shaka and Nai’mah Zulu exploded onto the scene at each R&S group, creating rhythms on the drums and dance floor and INSPIRING the youth to “PICK UP A DRUM…COME TOGETHER…”! LI music programs are designed to help children develop team-building skills, increase self-esteem and help create awareness of local indigenous music traditions and build community. The programs bring youth and communities together to explore, learn and celebrate and offer a reprieve from often challenging conditions. 100+ R&S youth are participating in weekly lessons with new percussion instruments and LI teaching artists from their community.

" To give them self-confidence and hope for the future.
I can see the power of young people."

Roots & Shoots Tanzania Staff Leader Erasto Njavike ‘s goal for the youth.

Pick up the drum, come together… when we were singing this song with the leadership of Jungle Shaka, there is no argument that music is a hidden power, which touches everybody. I believe that, now the tools have been given to the right people into right time and that LEAF International has got the catalyst into R&S program by using this tools to transform the life of people through Music and to pass the strong message on environmental care.

"ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR!!!!!!! LEAF International has successfully planted the seeds of musical magic in three fertile spots in the countryof Tanzania. Partnering with JGI's Roots and Shoots Programs in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and the Lugufu Refugee Camp, our LI team has brought the resources and inspiration to an amazing group of local Tanzanian musicians that will grow music education programs for children across the country. Using local music and dance as the conduit, our musician mentors will help the children spread the message of environmental responsibility to their peers and community. Greater understanding of environmental issues, and a call to action brought about by dance, drum, songs and smiles: the perfect partnership Roots & Shoots and LEAF International. Can't wait to see the "Harvest" to come!!!!" Create... with us, Ivica Bilich, LEAF Board President & WonderWorld Film/Video
