“LEAF is my happy place.” – Youth Participant
Step into the world of LEAF Schools & Streets across Asheville and you’ve got Master Teaching Artist and community ambassador, Lisa Zahiya teaching Hip Hop dance in the historic Burton Street Community Center; in the heart of Deaverview apartments with the Deaverview Dance Crew; and to teen dancers at Studio Zahiya. Across town just along South French Broad, dive into the enrichment and education at Delta House Life Development, Inc. for a week full of jazz sounds and heritage with Master Teaching Artist Gary Bradley and music enthusiast Sam Irvin IV. Meanwhile, back at LEAF Burton Street ONEmic Studio creativity is bouncing off the walls from Graffiti Art with Nex Millen; Intro to DJing with DJ Kutzu; and Songwriting with local musician, Lyric. For those of us that want to fill our lives with more hip hop and breakdancing, Otto “Aquaboogy” Vasquez bridges old school jams with new school beats for a convergence of poppin’ and lockin’ like you’ve never seen before at Pisgah View and Woodridge with long-time LEAF partner, Children First/Communities in Schools (CF/CIS). Wait..what’s that you say?! Want MORE of that in your life? You can find YMCA bumping twice a week with beats and moves that are out of this world thanks to partner, In Real Life (IRL). For those that are unafraid to take center stage and put on a show, Circus Arts & Theater Arts with Master Teaching Artists, Nina Ruffini & Erinn Hartley, also in partnership with IRL, is for YOU! And if all of that is not quite enough to wet your appetite for opportunities for youth to shine and build self-confidence, the drum calls to them and welcomes them to find a seat in the circle of life and journey to the rich West African traditions taught by djembefola & Culture Keeper, Adama Dembele at the Christine W. Avery Learning Center; and new LEAF partner, Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club.
At LEAF Schools & Streets, we welcome students at all levels to come join a program and get involved! For high school, college or adult-learning students, we welcome internships and on-the-job training opportunities of various kinds!
